"There was a huge divide in American politics between respectable German Jews and we're not like those filthy Eastern Europeans," he says. "If it's a ghetto wise thing, it happens to the Irish,. It happens to the Italians." He adds that his family didn't use Yiddish because if I said stuff jokes like that in front of my grandmother or my aunt, they would smack me across the face with their little white glove.
