The All-Trans Retinal Transducer, a Photoreceptor, Transmits Light Into Color Vision

The isomerization of one retinal molecule can activate as many as 800 transducin molecules. That slows the release of neurotransmitter, which translates into a signal that travels down the optic nerve into the brain. All of this is best studied in rods, which are responsible for the perception of basic outlines of shape in dim light.
