The Importance of the State in Economics
I was never a Marxist. Probably there was too much influence of Gandhiji's thinking and the reverence for Gandhi in me to go for the Marxist doctrine. Since then I have been an implacable supporter of the market. Wherever a market works in competition and choice are possible. And they are very clearly defined, limited all of the state. Unless we define the role of the state clearly and unless the state performs that role very well efficiently and fairly, the economy will be in shambles. By expanding your remit and trying to do everything and doing everything, generally badly, we messed up our society and governance.
