Purification of the Heart
Allah's path that I swear is abiding nafs fah al-hamma fudjuraha wa tabwaha gave you the potential to choose the path of evil wajjur and tabwaha. According to many scholars in the quran it's used interchangeably in Allah's panat al-naw's best but in the context of purification of the heart we're usually talking about those base desires we want to overcome. The harm that your nafs inflicts upon you is greater than anything your family can do. Your nafs yourself can cause you to lose the everlasting life of the afterlife so therefore it is more worthy of punishment and discipline.
