In many cases centralized companies take on the cost burden themselves in hopes to grow large enough to turn a profit. Google had to buy YouTube and pump billions into it just to keep it alive, and Amazon took a loss for over a decade. This new centralization seems to lead to new standards or worse yet outright censorship by the companies controlling the new distribution channel.
