I like to work on basically one thing. When I'm in the throes of writing a book, I close my calendar entirely and don't do anything else. Now occasionally things will infiltrate, but that's not how I do it. What I think about is an idea as a concept that I want to wake up and grapple with every day intensely for the next few years. And so you have to have a very high bar for that. You know, if I started writing gothic romances right now, people would say, what the hell are you? But I have no interest in doing that.
