Homer's audiences though believe that there were gods as described who behaved as described. I think they more or less thought that the gods had the morality that they have in Homer, which we could talk about in a second. They're not the Judeo-Christian god that rewards good and punishes evil. The whole cycle explains among other things why the gods no longer come down and visit us. You can see traces in the Odysse where Odysseus comes to town, people say, boy he looks like a god and this happens to you to be a god, I don't know. But these days we don't see the gods much anymore.
