Protection: Hallowe'en (Book 1, Chapter 10)
Harry Potter and the Sacred Text
Are We Really Bad at Protecting Ourself?

And so protection seems to have this eventual diminishing returns where it actually becomes harmful to be trying to protect someone. It almost seems like you need do a little bit of exposure to the things that can harm you in order to know that they are out there to harm you. That's what coddling is. It's not teaching children enough where the risks are, so that they believe the world is less risky than it is.
