The Impact of Sanctions on the Syrian Economy

In April 2011, the Obama administration applied sanctions against anyone who committed or supported human rights abuses in Syria. This shortly thereafter led that August, I think, to the United States banning the import of Syrian oil and then as you point out, crucially, the EU did the same. In 2005 to 2010, roughly 20% of Syria's total budget revenue came from oil. And so as you can see, those sanctions really hit hard by cutting off a quarter give or take of the country's revenue just as the war is on.
