Priesthood is the very first step, completing the requirements of the seminary. A priest typically needs to be ordained as a deacon and also must receive the stamp of approval from a bishop to even pursue becoming an exorcist. There are lay people who do undergo similar studies to priests and work as kind of like priest assistants, or right hands to the priestswho form exorcisms. Yes, like priests, these assistants need to live pious and sin free lives, be devout in prayers and united in the sacraments.
