The Purification of the Sanctuary

The purification offering was not to atone for the author's sin, or remove them of impurity. You had to be pure to make a sacrifice in the first place. The function of this offering was to cleanse the sanctuary of contamination caused by the supplicant's wickedness. This theology also provided a solution to the troublesome problem of why bad deeds were so often unpunished.
