I think that there's a perception that you use scroll, right? I think a lot of people associate the written word with things like books. People were finding that the information finding and cataloging of infrastructure that have been built starting in about the 11th century was unsatisfactorily cumbersome. And so people started dreaming originally of tools that would make some of this literal footwork easier to do.
