CHAPTER

The Fort Ancient Culture

The Fort Ancient Culture is a culture that developed alongside the Mississippian culture centred on southern Ohio. Effigy mounds are more common among the Fort Ancient Culture with not only the serpent mound but the alligator mound also attributed to them. The cultivation of the three traditional American crops maize, beans and squash appears to be well practiced by the Fort Ancient settlements. There appears to be less dependency on hunted meat than with previous cultures despite spears and atlatls having now been replaced by the bow and arrow.
