Papa thomas grew up on a rural estate in what was then called devonshire. His father was your basic run of the mill baronet. But his mother, whom you just mentioned, becket in that book, was spectacular. She's now considered a proto feminist and wasn't shy about sharing her opinions. So papa thomas was raised by a very unconventional woman and a man who allowed such radical thoughts.
