Trees are everywhere in Almaty, fed by the mountain rivers and streams that race through the city. Every citizen must plant five trees in front of his house to be named after a fruit tree. The scheme was such a roaring success that there are now some 138 different species of tree inAlmaty. There are fine apple orchards all over the city, as well as wild applewoods on the slopes of the Alatao mountains.
