Dysentery

Modern sources say it was a cholera outbreak and the symptoms were consistent with those of cholera. But dysentery can be caused by a number of different things. It's possible that this was a one off mutation that really did produce relapses, but that either died out or mutated further so that it hasn't been discovered. If any doctors in the audience want to do further research on this, i'd love to hear what you discover.
