Love is the capacity to be both one and many at the same time. And becomes a manner in which our human relationships can be bound together. For modern people, it's hard to understand this because we tend to understand god as an arbitrary being. But there is a sense in which the mediaeval person, or the mediaeval understood god as the source of all good - so love should move slowly towards the good. If you want to understand love, that's basically a definition of love.
