How Did the Church Come to Be?
The medieval church was a sprawling collection of institutions, offices, groups and individual people. The pope sat at the top of the hierarchy with his centralized bureaucracy called the kudiya. Outside that hierarchy were individual monastic houses and whole monastic orders like the Cistercians. Alongside these groups of religious,. meaning those who took some sort of vow and were subject to canon law, were lay devotional organizations.
