How White Identity Was Constructed and Emerged
The meaning of race was very different in the 19th century than it is today we think of race primarily in terms of skin color continent of origin black white asian and so on. Benjamin Franklin thought that Germans were too swarthy to be white and he complained about German predominance in early America. The only group that was unquestionably white was Anglo-Saxon but by 20th century there were three developments I think that transformed perceptions of race and whiteness into something recognizable today.
