The Origins of Egyptian Hieroglyphs

Some scholars claim that Egyptian hieroglyphs developed from early Sumerian script. Some state that Egyptian script emerged about a hundred years after cuneiform but there really doesn't seem to be a confident consensus about this and it would be wrong to claim one or the other. One of the largest differences we find between these early forms of writing and modern alphabets such as the Latin alphabet is that there could have been as many as a thousand symbols in common use at any one time. Both were still in use even if in decreasing frequency right through until the common era of the last 2000 years.
