This book has a surface, thoughtson machiavelle, has a surface that is appreciable. Even if you don't plumb the depths of strauss's text, i completely agree with that. And he seems to have written it that way deliberately. So this is 58, and strauss lived another 25 years. His books get progressively leaner and sparer as he goes along from this point,. It's almost like he did the maxim. All his book length an eno for the rest of his life, was on a ancient political philosophy. This kind of was his monument, in a way, to two to two great themes of his whole life.
