The Importance of Honesty

Even soldiers who'd come back with all their limbs and organs intact carried feelings of guilt and anguish over what they'd done in Afghanistan. One officer reflected: The Afghans weren't people to us and vice versa. We couldn't afford to see them as human beings. Other soldiers felt no remorse for what they had done during the war. As one said defiantly, we pointed our guns where we were told and then fired them exactly as we'd been trained.
