How Does the House of Lords Work?
There's no normal day. I spend more time in the House of Lords when I'm spending less time at the bar. If there's a bill that excites my interest, then I will devote a lot of time. It can be very time consuming, but very satisfying. The House of Lords is a remarkable institution. We make the law, but we're not elected. And rightly so, almost always we give way because they're elected and we're not. So we are a constitutional anomaly. Sometimes we poke our noses into big policy issues,. Then it goes backwards and forwards between the Lords and the Commons - what we quaintly call ping-pong.
