Dr. John B.B calls it the anima or the animus and this function spins off in two different directions like you just mentioned. It either ignores anything that comes up that is in this realm, like in the slice of life that this function usually is focused on. The other option is to double down on the rules. We all do this in our personality or you just decide not to look at it at all. And then it creates challenges from us because it's a very uncertain part of us.
