At that time in history, the most powerful empire in the world was the Persian Empire. This empire stretched from India to Turkey and they saw Athens as a threat. So of course they wanted to fight against Athens. And one of the most significant battles was the battle at Marathon. A man named Phidipides actually ran all the way to Sparta to try to ask them for help to fight the Persians. The bad thing is that Sparta refused to help.
