The History of Zhang Yimu
Zhang Yimu shot Chen Cage's first film, Yellow Earth. After they graduated, Zhang Chen Cage and another filmmaker named Zhang Zhang Zhao lobbied the Ministry of Culture to make their own independent projects. The first fifth generation film was by that filmmaker Zhang Zhang Zhao. But the first to achieve international recognition, really the first mainland Chinese film since the 30s to get any kind of international exposure, was Chen Cage's Yellow Earth.
