More than two million people refused to go to work until their political demands were met. By october sixteenth, 19 o five, the russian empire was effectively shut down. Trains did not run. Telegraphs could not be sent. Businesses were closed and boarded up. Factories stopped running in every major urban center,. Economic activity ceased, and people just stayed home.
