i'm not sure we were expecting the breadth and sweep of the chief justice's majority opinion i think maybe the reason it was a little bit surprising michelle is that he had modulated some of his views on race in the voting rights cases just in the weeks before. It seems like a patent inconsistency right it's difficult to understand um what i will say is that allen v milligan the voting rights case I mean it was a quintessential case of vote dilution it was so clear and perhaps this is an instance where we're seeing a jurist who can recognize racism in its most egregious forms but may have some difficulty wrapping his mind around something that looks more like prophylactic
