German Unification - Episode Eight Point Two

After the austro prussian war, the northern german states were indeed absorbed into union with prussia. The southern german states remained outside the union. Coinciding with the declaration of the german empire was the last great attempt by the french to break out of paris. And they aimed themselves straight at versailles, where the entire german leadership was now stationed. There is a reason that the negotiations ending world war one were held in versailles. But that is a story for another time.
