In the bible, a jewish man was beaten by robbers and left for dead. A priest on his way back fromJerusalem saw him but didn't stop to help because he thought someone else should do it. The samaritans retaliated saying that they were actually the true people of god. They set up their own altar so they could proclaim themselves the right ones.
