"I don't need a randomized controlled trial to tell me that if people get better off they get happier. Well actually I mean that's a lot of what the RCTs on cash transfers are doing," he says. "Even if you did a thousand RCTs in tons of different countries and every time you found that cash transfers increased people's consumption and made them happier you would claim that you haven't learned anything." He adds: "The idea that if you do them often enough like the graduation experiment that somehow it always works is really preposterous both logically and in practice"
