The Process of Individualization

Yung describes individuation as a process by which a person becomes the definite, unique being that he or she in fact is. Individuation can be understood as a kind of return to our own natural unfolding from which we have become alienated due to an over development of mind and consciousness. A classic image often used to describe this process is that of an acorn that becomes an oak tree.
