Reimagined City Streets and Collective Spaces as Commons

The chapter explores how working-class communities reimagine these streets, wastelands of the industrial city as a material and social resource. World law reform envisioned a system of public facilities that were meant to replace those subaltern commons. The elite and sectors of the emerging middle classes saw this with anxiety. And they sought to create these alternative places of encounter which would provide fundamental services to the poor.
