A.G. Salzberger, the publisher of The New York Times, has published an essay called Journalism's Essential Value. It's a defense of the traditional, independent stance held by generations of reporters at a moment of intense controversies over news coverage. One particularly damaging controversy that erupted under A.G.'s watch was the publication of a guest opinion column by Arkansas Senator Tom Cotton. In June 2020, during the protests that followed George Floyd's murder by police, the Times op-ed page published Cotton's essay with the headline, Send in the Troops.
