The self is a kind of at once fixed, but very much defined by desire and feeling like what you want makes you who you are. I think we have a soul, but obviously without trying to resort to theological language, I think that who we are as people is simultaneously the crystallized thing at the heart of us. And so presentation and actualization and artificiality and authenticity do end up converging. It's not a soul. We don't necessarily have a shared cultural discourse about the soul beyond kind of using it as a vague stand in for something we can't quite understand.
