The Wrestling of Abraham Lincoln
In 1833, Lincoln becomes Postmaster of New Salem. A year later he stands for a seat in the Illinois State Legislature. He is elected to captain his local battalion and gets military experience. But it comes at a political cost: being away on duty means he's unable to get out among the people ahead of the election. His second run for the Illinois legislature is successful. As one of his opponents notes, everyone knew him, and he knew everyone.
