The Uncertainty Principle and Quantum Tunneling
Quantum tunneling is a phenomenon that occurs when particles move from one position to another without having to go intermediate between the two. It's possible because of the uncertainty principle, which says you can't rule out things with more or less energy than we think they have. The Pauli exclusion principle also explains why electrons inhabit different energy levels around atoms. If all elements and compounds were just concentrated in the lowest energy level, there would be no chemistry at all.
