The History of the Persian Empire
In 507 BC, Athens turned to Persia as an ally against the Spartans. Arta Faranese said that he would help, but only if they put down their new government and install hippias as a seitrap of Athens. The Athenian envoys responded with a resounding 'no', which angered Persian king Darius. A rare piece of epigraphic evidence, now housed in the Louvre, goes in precisely the opposite direction.
