As pogroms swept through Europe in the early 20th century, traditional communities found themselves transplanting their customs to Palestine or America. Many Khareid survivors made their way to Israel, a country founded on the premise of the new Jew. Zionism was simply not compatible with their way of life and many viewed it as out and out heresy. The Khareid commitment to Torah values and Torah lifestyle is successful because the community protects itself fiercely from the rest of Israeli society.
