Alexander lightfoot manley was the publisher of a respected weekly black newspaper in wilmington. He had long tried to follow in the tradition of abraham galloway before him, advocating for equality and justice for the black citizens around cape fear when he stirred the pot. White supremacists threatened to haul manley out of his newspaper office and lynch him. But josephus daniels discouraged such mob action. After all, it was only august. So he much preferred to keep stoking resentments until election day.
