Six-year-old Edgardo mortara had been baptized by the church in bologna, Italy. The Catholic doctrine says that a baptized child should be considered catholic and therefore can't be brought up by jews. Two of edgardo's uncles rush off to san domenico church to talk to the inquisitor who oversees baptisms. He tells them it is his duty under church law to remove him from their care.
