The japanese chestnut was harboring a spores fungus of criphonectria parasitica. By 19 50, it had swept through the entirety of the range. People remembered hearing the way it sounded when the huge dead trees would fall. Sarah says her grandfather would talk with her about losing the tree hat before he died: "Make sure that the trees come back"
