I Shall Be Avenged Seventy Sevenfold, Declared by a Man and Not God
Cain's grandson would go on to kill a man and a boy, declare that if Cain shall be avenged sevenfold, then he should be avenged seventy sevenfold. What began as a rule pronounced by God to prevent revenge has become a war cry. The message from the story of Cain and Abel is clear: A culture born of violence must return to violence.
