Introduction
The quest to eliminate smallpox started with Edward Jenner in the 18th century. The cow that provided the cowpox was named blossom, and our hide now hangs on the wall of St George's Medical School Library. In 1972, a single patient who was coming back from a trip to the Middle East led to an outbreak of 175 cases and 35 deaths before it was contained.
