The Kings had two flop singles in a row, on a three single contract. Larry Page advised Ray to concentrate on riffs as he wasn't a great singer at this point. The final touch that turned it into one of the great classics came from Dave rather than Ray. He'd been frustrated with the sound he was getting from his amplifier, and had slashed the cone with a knife,. Then fed the sound from that slashed amp through his new larger amp, to get a distorted fuzzy sound which was almost unknown in written at the time.
