The Alfred plea gets its name from Henry Alfred, a black man living in North Carolina at the height of the Civil Rights Movement. He was charged with first-degree murder; if found guilty he would be put to death. The prosecutor offered him a plea deal that could avoid a costly trial. But when it came time for Alfred to vocalize his guilty plea, things got complicated.
