In different traditions, the character takes on different names. He's sometimes stakle, stakole, stagle or stagole. Most often, staggerlee is depicted killing his victim over little more than a white stetson hat. In many tellings, billy makes the fatal choice of snatching stagerlee's prized hat from his head.
