Geoffrey jerome cohen proposes that the story is about racial difference and allows william of newburg to write obliquely about the welsh. I find this theory to be extremely unlikely. While there have been occasions in history where people living under a tyrannical state were forced to use coded fiction as a way of communicating politically subversive ideas, i don't see evidence for that in this case. This story is not presented as fiction, but as history. And it's independently corroborated by ralph cogasoll, who says he got it directly from eye witnesses.
