Act Utilitarianism and Rule Utitarism - What's the Difference?

An act utilitarian thinks that an act is right or wrong depending on whether it produces as much utility as any available alternative. A rule utilitarian says we shouldn't judge acts by their utility. The distinction between the two was not actually given that name until 1959.
