SMUT, Spittlefields Market Under Threat
It was a place where many people could come and as it were set up stall and offer something and trade with one another. When the market was moved out to where it now is, which is near Canary Wharf, this site became of prime interest to big city developers who had always been looking at it envious from the square mile. And there was a huge campaign to protect spittlefield market. Its acronym was SMUT, spittlefields market under threat. Lots of local people, including many, many religious people, took to the streets and marched in order to try and save it as a public space. In fact, they were unsuccessful.
